The Bantam Historical Society was organized in 1975 by a group of local residents interested in preserving the unique history and interesting aspects of Bantam and the surrounding area. The Society's goal is to appreciate, discover and preserve Bantam's history.
In its thirty-nine years of existence, the Society has acquired and preserved many old glass plate negatives, photographs, post cards, signs documents and other local memorabilia. In conjunction with the local chapter of the American Legion, permanent displays are presented at the Bantam Borough Hall. Arrangements can also be made for the public to view the entire collection.
In an effort to encourage and preserve interest i the area, the Society sponsors guest speakers. Topics have included subjects such as the former railroad, the building of the "aqueduct tunnel" and the industries that flourished along the Bantam River. Speakers have also brought to life the area's historic personages such as "The Leatherman."
The Society has assisted in writing and publishing an illustrated book detailing Bantam during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Society also restored the bell that is displayed on the site of the Methodist Church destroyed by the 1989 tornado.
The Bantam Historical Society meets the second Monday of each month in the Gilyard Room of the Bantam Borough Hall. New members are always welcome.
